Doing things
🎯 Use the present and future, and ask questions.
🗣️ Say these out loud
- నేను వెళ్తాను — nenu veltaanu 🔊 NAY-noo VEL-taa-noo I go / I will go. Telugu's -తాను covers both present habit and future.
- నేను చదువుతున్నాను — nenu chaduvutunnaanu 🔊 NAY-noo cha-du-vu-toon-NAA-noo I am reading (right now). -తున్నాను is the 'right now' form.
- మీరు వస్తారా? — meeru vastaaraa? 🔊 MEE-roo vas-TAA-raa Are you coming? -ఆ at the end makes a yes/no question, exactly as in Tamil.
- నాకు కావాలి — naaku kaavaali 🔊 NAA-koo KAA-vaa-li I want it. వద్దు vaddu = I don't want. Two essential words.
- ఏమి చేస్తున్నారు? — emi chestunnaaru? 🔊 E-mi ches-toon-NAA-roo What are you doing? ఏమి emi = what.
- ఉండండి — undandi 🔊 oon-DAN-di Please wait. Heard constantly, in shops and on the phone.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 One question marker, at the very end
As in Tamil, Telugu makes a yes/no question by adding a vowel — ఆ — to the end. Word order does not change at all.
- వస్తారు = you are coming → వస్తారా? = are you coming?
- బాగుంది = it is good → బాగుందా? = is it good?
- For what/where/who questions, the question word simply stands where the answer would stand.
🌍 Among the people
Telugu cinema is now one of the largest film industries in the world, and its dialogue is the fastest route into spoken Telugu for a learner — especially the family scenes rather than the action ones.
🔁 Practise today
- Turn five statements into questions with -ఆ.
- Say five things you do every day, verb last.
- Learn కావాలి and వద్దు and use them at your next meal.
