Career Guidance: what next?

The right career is where interest (what you love), aptitude (what you are good at) and opportunity (what the world needs) overlap. Most wrong choices come from picking only one of the three — usually what a friend chose or what a relative said.

Every stream leads to respected, well-paid work. The question is not "which is best?" but "which is best for this student?"

A myth to drop"Science keeps all options open." Only if you can pass it happily. A student forced into PCM who loves history spends two miserable years and still ends up in arts — later and less confident. Aptitude tests plus honest conversation beat pressure.

02How to choose: a 5-step method

List what you enjoy — outside marksWhat do you do when nobody is making you? Draw, fix things, argue, organise, explain, cook, code, run?

Take an aptitude testSchools and free online tests measure verbal, numerical, spatial, logical and mechanical ability. Look for the top two.

Talk to three people in the fieldAsk what a normal Tuesday looks like, what they hate, what they earn after 5 years. Reality beats brochures.

Check the pathEntrance exams, years of study, cost, where the jobs are. Write it down as a timeline.

Decide, then commit for a yearNo choice is final at 15. Decide with the information you have, work hard, review after a year.

03Careers in IT and technology

India's largest employer of graduates — and no longer only for engineers. Commerce and arts students enter through data analytics, UX design, digital marketing and product roles.

Any stream + coding skill (Python, JavaScript, Java). Degree helps; portfolio of real projects matters more.

Data analyst / scientist

Maths + statistics + curiosity. Excel → SQL → Python. Every industry needs one.

AI / machine learning

Strong maths (linear algebra, probability) + programming. The fastest-growing field of the decade.

UX / graphic / game design

Arts + technology. Figma, Blender, Unity. Portfolio is the degree.

Networks, ethical hacking, law. Certifications (CEH, CompTIA) open doors early.
