Keeping Telugu
🎯 Build a habit, and find the writing worth reading.
🗣️ Say these out loud
- దీన్ని తెలుగులో ఏమంటారు? — deenni Telugulo emantaaru? 🔊 DEEN-ni te-lu-GU-lo e-man-TAA-roo What is this called in Telugu? Point and ask.
- నెమ్మదిగా చెప్పండి — nemmadigaa cheppandi 🔊 nem-ma-di-GAA CHEP-pan-di Please say it slowly.
- సాధన — saadhana 🔊 SAA-dha-na practice, disciplined effort A Sanskrit word that carries more weight than 'practice' does in English.
- ప్రయత్నం చేస్తూ ఉండండి — prayatnam chestoo undandi 🔊 pra-YAT-nam ches-TOO oon-DAN-di Keep making the effort.
- విద్య లేని వాడు వింత పశువు 🔊 VID-ya LAY-ni VAA-du VIN-ta pa-SHU-vu A person without learning is a strange beast. From Vemana, the 17th-century poet whose four-line verses every Telugu child learns.
- శుభాకాంక్షలు — shubhaakaankshalu 🔊 shu-bhaa-KAANK-sha-lu Best wishes! Before an exam or a journey.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 Start with Vemana
Vemana's padyams are four lines long, in plain village Telugu, each ending with the same refrain. They are the traditional first reading for a Telugu learner, and they were written to be understood by everybody.
- Learn one Vemana verse a week.
- Then Sumati Shatakam — another set of short moral verses used in schools.
- Then modern short stories: Sri Sri's poetry is harder but worth the climb.
- Watch Telugu films with Telugu subtitles; family dramas, not action films, for the everyday speech.
🌍 Among the people
Telugu was declared a classical language of India in 2008. It is examined by the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana boards at every level, and Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University in Hyderabad runs courses for non-native learners.
