Froebel — the original kindergarten
Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood — not a break from learning but the form learning takes.
👶 How it sees the child
A growing thing, to be tended as a garden is tended. That is where the word comes from.
🕘 What a day looks like
Free play with structured 'gifts' (balls, cubes, cylinders, sticks) and 'occupations' (weaving, folding, modelling), plenty of singing, movement and outdoor gardening.
🔍 How it assesses a child
Observation of play, with the adult recording what the child chooses and how they use it. Froebel's own writing is the origin of the modern principle that early assessment must be observational.

⚠️ Fair criticisms
- Rarely found in pure form today
- Froebel's mystical symbolism sits oddly with modern practice
- Overtaken by later systems that borrowed most of its ideas

Indirect but enormous: 'kindergarten', 'KG', 'play-way' and the whole idea that small children should play at school all come from here.

- The ages given are typical ranges, not deadlines. Children vary enormously, and most children who are 'late' for something are simply children.

- Any loss of skills a child already had — words, walking, social interest — should be discussed with a doctor promptly, at any age.
- Have hearing and vision checked before school begins. A great many 'learning problems' in the early years turn out to be hearing or sight.
- A preschool that tests, ranks or gives homework to four-year-olds is not following any recognised system on this page, including India's own national framework.
