Paper Bridge Holds Books

✨ One sheet of paper that cannot hold five coins flat will hold a book once you fold it the right way.

A flat paper sheet sagging under three coins next to a concertina-folded sheet holding a tall stack of coins, with a bent beam below showing the top squeezed and the bottom stretched.
How it works

🧰 You need

  • several sheets of A4 paper
  • two equal stacks of books to be the supports
  • a pile of identical coins
  • one light book
  • a ruler

πŸ‘€ What you will see

The flat sheet sags immediately and gives up after a few coins. The concertina holds dozens of coins and often a light book as well. All three bridges contain exactly the same amount of paper, so only the shape has changed.

πŸ§ͺ Do it

  1. Set the two book stacks twenty centimetres apart to make a gap.
  2. Lay a flat sheet across the gap and add coins in the middle one at a time until it collapses, counting as you go.
  3. Fold a fresh sheet into a concertina of about ten folds along its length.
  4. Lay the folded sheet across the same gap and load coins the same way.
  5. Record both counts, then try the light book on the folded bridge.
  6. Roll a third sheet into a tight tube and test that too.

πŸ’‘ Why it happens

Paper is not weak, it is floppy: it bends long before it tears. When a beam bends, the top surface gets squeezed and the bottom gets stretched, and material placed far above and below the middle resists that strongly. Folds and tubes push the paper away from the middle, giving the beam depth, which is what makes it stiff. This is exactly why roofing sheets are corrugated and why steel beams are shaped like the letter I.

πŸ” Now try this

Compare a sheet with six big folds against a sheet with twenty small folds, loading coins on each until it fails.

πŸ€” Think about it

Why is corrugated cardboard so much stronger than the same amount of flat card?
