Reading Devanagari
๐ฏ Read and write your own name and simple words โ the script takes a week, not a year.
๐ฃ๏ธ Say these out loud
- เค เค เค เค เค เค ๐ a aa i ee u oo the first six vowels Each vowel has a full form (เค ) used at the start of a word, and a mark (เคพ เคฟ เฅ เฅ เฅ) used after a consonant.
- เค + เคพ = เคเคพ ๐ ka + aa = kaa how a vowel mark works เค already contains 'a'. Adding เคพ makes it 'kaa', เคฟ makes it 'ki', เฅ makes it 'kee'.
- เคเฅ + เค = เค ๐ โ the halant kills the vowel The small stroke เฅ under a letter removes its built-in 'a'. เคเฅ is just 'k'.
- เคจเคฎเคธเฅเคคเฅ ๐ na-ma-ste read it letter by letter เคจ + เคฎ + เคธเฅ + เคคเฅ. See the halant under เคธ joining it to เคค.
- เคญเคพเคฐเคค โ Bhaarat ๐ BHAA-rut India เคญ is 'bha', เคพ makes it 'bhaa', เคฐ is 'ra', เคค is 'ta'.
- เคเคฟเคคเคพเคฌ โ kitaab ๐ ki-TAAB book เค with เคฟ = ki; เคค with เคพ = taa; เคฌ = b. Note the เคฟ is written before the letter but said after it.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
๐ Why Devanagari is easier than the English alphabet
English writes 'through', 'though' and 'tough' with the same letters and three different sounds. Devanagari has one sound per letter, always, and the letters are arranged in a scientific order โ by where in the mouth they are made, from the throat outwards.

- เค เค เคก เคข เคฃ โ tongue curled to the roof
- เคค เคฅ เคฆ เคง เคจ โ tongue at the teeth
- เคช เคซ เคฌ เคญ เคฎ โ made at the lips
- That order was worked out by Indian grammarians well over two thousand years ago, and it is still how phonetics classifies sounds today.
