Montessori
A child has an inbuilt drive to become independent, and passes through 'sensitive periods' when a particular learning comes easily. The adult's job is to prepare an environment and then get out of the way.
👶 How it sees the child
Competent, self-directed, and capable of long concentration if it is not interrupted.
🕘 What a day looks like
A three-hour uninterrupted work cycle. Children choose from precise, self-correcting materials on open shelves — pink tower, sandpaper letters, golden beads. Mixed ages, usually three years in one room, so children teach each other.
🔍 How it assesses a child
Observation, recorded against the sequence of materials the child has been presented with and has mastered. Mastery is shown by the child's own repetition and by the three-period lesson ('this is rough' — 'show me rough' — 'what is this?'). No marks, no stars, no comparisons between children.
✅ What it does well
- Genuine independence and practical competence
- Long, deep concentration is protected
- The materials self-correct, so the child learns without an adult's judgment
- Very strong for early mathematics and practical life
⚠️ Fair criticisms
- The name is not trademarked, so quality varies enormously between schools
- Some settings restrict imaginative and pretend play
- Original materials are used in a fixed way, which can feel rigid
- Research is generally favourable but the good studies are few
🇮🇳 In India
Montessori teacher training and schools are widespread in India; look for AMI or AMS accreditation, since anyone may use the name.

- The ages given are typical ranges, not deadlines. Children vary enormously, and most children who are 'late' for something are simply children.
- This page cannot diagnose anything. If something concerns you, take it to a paediatrician — early support is effective, and waiting to see is usually the more expensive choice.
- Any loss of skills a child already had — words, walking, social interest — should be discussed with a doctor promptly, at any age.
- Have hearing and vision checked before school begins. A great many 'learning problems' in the early years turn out to be hearing or sight.
- A preschool that tests, ranks or gives homework to four-year-olds is not following any recognised system on this page, including India's own national framework.
