Waldorf / Steiner
Childhood has distinct seven-year phases, and in the first the child learns through imitation, rhythm and imagination rather than instruction.
👶 How it sees the child
A being who unfolds in stages and should not be hurried.
🕘 What a day looks like
Strong daily and seasonal rhythm; storytelling, singing, baking, handwork, plenty of outdoor time, natural open-ended materials, and deliberately no screens. Formal reading is usually not taught until about age seven.
🔍 How it assesses a child
No testing and no grading in the early years. The teacher writes a detailed narrative account of each child, often staying with the same class for several years, and meets parents to discuss it.
✅ What it does well
- Unhurried, calm and rhythmic — many children settle well in it
- Outstanding for imagination, story and handwork
- Whole-child: art, music and practical craft are core, not extras
- Teachers know children over many years
⚠️ Fair criticisms
- Late formal literacy worries some parents, though research on later outcomes is mixed rather than damning
- Steiner's anthroposophy underlies the pedagogy, which some families do not want
- Some schools have had low vaccination rates, which is a genuine public-health concern
- Screens are avoided in a way that does not suit every family

A number of Waldorf and Steiner-inspired schools operate in India, mostly in and around the larger cities.

- The ages given are typical ranges, not deadlines. Children vary enormously, and most children who are 'late' for something are simply children.
- This page cannot diagnose anything. If something concerns you, take it to a paediatrician — early support is effective, and waiting to see is usually the more expensive choice.
- Any loss of skills a child already had — words, walking, social interest — should be discussed with a doctor promptly, at any age.
- Have hearing and vision checked before school begins. A great many 'learning problems' in the early years turn out to be hearing or sight.
- A preschool that tests, ranks or gives homework to four-year-olds is not following any recognised system on this page, including India's own national framework.
