🗣️ Say these out loud
- असतो मा सद्गमय 🔊 a-SA-to maa sad GA-ma-ya From the unreal, lead me to the real. असतः = from the unreal · मा = me · सत् = the real · गमय = lead (a command).
- तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय 🔊 TA-ma-so maa JYO-tir GA-ma-ya From darkness, lead me to light. तमसः = from darkness · ज्योतिः = light. The same shape repeated — Sanskrit teaches by repetition.
- मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय 🔊 mrit-YOR maa a-MRI-tam GA-ma-ya From death, lead me to deathlessness. मृत्योः = from death · अमृतम् = the deathless (a = not, mrita = dead — the same 'a-' as in 'atheist').
- ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः 🔊 om SHAAN-tih SHAAN-tih SHAAN-tih Om, peace, peace, peace. Said three times for peace in three places: in oneself, in one's surroundings, and in the forces beyond either.
- -तः / -तस् 🔊 — the 'from' ending असतः, तमसः, मृत्योः — all mean 'from'. One ending, three times, and you have found the pattern yourself.
- गमय — gamaya 🔊 GA-ma-ya cause to go — lead From गम् gam (to go), the same root as the English 'come'. The -अय makes it 'cause to'.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 Reading a verse: find the verb, then the endings
This verse from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad has one verb repeated three times and three nouns in the 'from' case. Once you see that, the whole verse opens — and it is a method that works on any shloka.
- Step 1: find the verb — गमय (lead).
- Step 2: find who is acted on — मा (me).
- Step 3: find the endings — -तः / -ोः, all meaning 'from'.
- Step 4: the remaining words are the destination — सत्, ज्योतिः, अमृतम्.
- Try the method on any verse you already half-know.
