The joining of sounds
🎯 Understand sandhi — why Sanskrit words seem to melt into each other.
🗣️ Say these out loud
- तत् + एव = तदेव 🔊 ta-DAY-va that itself त् + ए became द् + ए. A hard consonant softens before a vowel.
- सत् + गमय = सद्गमय 🔊 sad-GA-ma-ya lead to the real The same softening, in the verse you just learnt.
- मृत्योः + मा = मृत्योर्मा 🔊 mrit-YOR-maa from death, me The visarga ः became र् before म.
- विद्या + अर्थी = विद्यार्थी 🔊 vid-YAAR-thee student — 'one who seeks knowledge' आ + अ became आ. This is how the word for 'student' was built, and why it is the same in Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu and Kannada.
- सूर्य + उदय = सूर्योदय 🔊 soor-YO-da-ya sunrise अ + उ became ओ. Every Indian language inherited this word whole.
- देव + आलय = देवालय 🔊 day-VAA-la-ya temple — 'the house of the god' अ + आ became आ. हिम + आलय = हिमालय, 'the house of snow'.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 Sandhi is the ear made into a rule
Sanskrit writes what a mouth actually does. When two sounds meet, speech naturally smooths them — and Sanskrit wrote that smoothing into its spelling. This is why words seem to fuse: they are not fusing, they are being written honestly.
- अ + अ = आ · अ + इ = ए · अ + उ = ओ
- Try saying 'deva aalaya' fast: you will produce 'devaalaya' without trying.
- Knowing three or four sandhi rules lets you split most compound words.
- Splitting a long word at the right place is most of what reading Sanskrit is.
🌍 Among the people
Sandhi is also why Sanskrit lines scan so smoothly in metre: the language was shaped for recitation, and its spelling follows the voice rather than the eye.
