- उद्यमेन हि सिध्यन्ति कार्याणि न मनोरथैः 🔊 ud-ya-MAY-na hi sidh-YAN-ti KAAR-yaa-ni na ma-no-ra-THAIH Tasks are accomplished by effort, not by wishes. उद्यम = effort · कार्य = task · मनोरथ = a wish (literally 'a chariot of the mind').
- न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगाः 🔊 na hi SUP-tas-ya SIN-has-ya pra-VI-shan-ti MU-khay mri-GAAH Deer do not walk into the mouth of a sleeping lion. The second half of the same verse — the image that makes the lesson stick.
- विद्या ददाति विनयं 🔊 VID-yaa da-DAA-ti vi-NA-yam Knowledge gives humility. The verse continues: humility gives worthiness, worthiness gives wealth, wealth gives right action, and right action gives happiness.
- अलसस्य कुतो विद्या 🔊 a-LA-sas-ya KU-to VID-yaa Where is knowledge for the lazy? From a chain verse: no knowledge without effort, no wealth without knowledge, no friends without wealth, no happiness without friends.
- मातृदेवो भव, पितृदेवो भव, आचार्यदेवो भव 🔊 maa-tri-DAY-vo BHA-va… Let your mother be a god to you; your father; your teacher. Taittiriya Upanishad — the convocation address given to students on leaving the school, about 2,500 years ago.
- सत्यं वद, धर्मं चर 🔊 SAT-yam VA-da, DHAR-mam CHA-ra Speak the truth; walk in right conduct. From the same address. Two verbs in the command form: वद (speak), चर (walk).
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 The command form, and the chain verse
Sanskrit gives orders with a short ending — भव (be), वद (speak), चर (walk), गमय (lead). And its teaching verses often build a chain, each line taking up the last word of the one before, so the whole verse locks into memory.
- विद्या ददाति विनयं, विनयाद् याति पात्रताम्…
- Each step begins with the word that ended the step before.
- This is a memory device, and it is why these verses survived for centuries with no books at all.
- Learn a chain verse and you will find you cannot forget it.
🌍 Among the people
Subhashitas — 'well-spoken things' — were collected in anthologies and used to teach both language and conduct at once. They are short enough for a child and deep enough for an adult.
