🗣️ Say these out loud
- अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेय 🔊 abh-YAA-say-na tu KOUN-tay-ya But by practice, O son of Kunti… Bhagavad Gita 6.35: the mind is restless, but it is steadied by practice and by dispassion. Krishna's answer to every student who says 'I cannot concentrate'.
- श्रद्धावान् लभते ज्ञानम् 🔊 shrad-DHAA-vaan LA-bha-tay GYAA-nam One who has faith attains knowledge. Gita 4.39. श्रद्धा shraddha is not blind belief — it is the willingness to keep going before you can see the result.
- स्वाध्याय — svaadhyaaya 🔊 svaa-DHYAA-ya study by oneself, of oneself स्व (own) + अध्याय (lesson). One of the oldest words for self-directed learning.
- गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः 🔊 gu-RUR BRAH-maa gu-RUR VISH-nuh The teacher is the creator, the teacher is the preserver… गुरु = heavy, weighty — one whose words carry weight, and in one reading, one who removes darkness.
- विद्यां ददाति विनयम् 🔊 VID-yaam da-DAA-ti vi-NA-yam It is knowledge that gives humility. Worth returning to at the end of any course.
- शुभमस्तु — shubham astu 🔊 SHU-bham AS-tu May there be good. Written at the end of a manuscript by the scribe who copied it.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 An honest order of study
Sanskrit is genuinely difficult, and pretending otherwise wastes a student's year. But it is difficult in a predictable order, and following that order works.
- First: read Devanagari fluently aloud, including conjuncts. Two to four weeks.
- Then: the present tense of ten common verbs, and the singular noun endings for -अ nouns.
- Then: sandhi — the four or five rules that split most compounds.
- Then: read the Gita's second chapter slowly with a word-by-word translation beside you.
- Then, and only then, the full declension tables. They make sense once you have met the forms in real verses.
- Examinations: CBSE and most state boards offer Sanskrit to Std 12; the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan runs graded certificates for adult learners.
🌍 Among the people
Sanskrit is spoken daily in a few villages, among them Mattur in Karnataka, and there is a small but real movement of conversational Sanskrit (संभाषण संस्कृतम्) that teaches it as a spoken language rather than a museum piece.
